A Mid Week Adventure

"MAMA!!! Bastille is coming to Zurich this Thursday! I can't believe it! Can I go? Please???? Pleeeeaaase?" It is Tuesday evening and Nelly Bo, 15, is giving me the dog eyes... She is for sure putting me on the spot! She obviously wants an answer RIGHT NOW, as the tickets she has temporary reserved for 10 minutes will disappear shortly... And there are only 27 tickets left... I feel pressured. I go blank. I get a teeny weeny irritated. Because I don't like to be put on the spot like this.

While stirring in pots and pans for dinner, my brain tries to figure out how I can make this happen for her. Zurich is a good 3 hours away by train or car and a concert doesn't finish until midnight usually... It is school night, and she is only 15. I don't want her on a train on her own late at night... She doesn't know Zurich and neither do I. I make a quick decision that she can go if I take her and her best friend there. The minute I say yes she screams of delight and gives me a big hug. This might not be the most clever decision I have made as a mother. But in that moment it feels like the greatest decision ever as I instantly know I'm writing unforgettable memories for my girl.

On Wednesday she came home with tulips. A bouquet of pink for pink February. And she couldn't hug and thank me enough for being "The best Mama ever...." So sweet. I have to be honest though, I don't look forward to an almost 6 hours car ride to Zurich back and forth, and especially not at midnight. I don't look forward to not knowing what to do in Zurich while Nelly Bo and her girlfriend are rocking it in the arena (because I am obviously not going to the concert standing up for 3+ hours in an ocean of teenage girls, no no no...). I think I'll grab a movie, sit down for a nice meal in a restaurant and hook away on a WiP in the parking lot with a head light on while waiting for concert to end. And I will pack pillows and blankets in the car so the two,  probably over excited and exhausted but unbelievably euphoric teenage girls can comfortable fall asleep in the car on the way home. Oh, and I will stash up on energy drinks and coffees for the ride home. It will be all good. It will be a great middle week adventure to add to the memories of crazy things I've done. We only live once, right?

  5. You are a nice Mama, for sure! My parents had a similar experience with me taking me to Detroit (an hour away from home)to see a Rolling Stone concert. No cell phones then, so they kept the radio on in their car in case the concert got out early. Well, I was in the front row and some dumb kids broke down the barrier between us and the stage and stormed the Stones onstage. I had a big burly policeman scoop me up and carry me across the stage and out the exit...but I got to see the Stones up close as he carried me past them! I'll never forget that experience..quite exhilarating even 'tho I didn't get to hear a concert. My folks found me by the backstage door..believe me, they had some bad moments before they found me...but they had heard on the radio that the Stones concert had broken up. So funny now!

  8. Yep, I think my first instinct would be 'hell, no!' too, but you know what, that reaction has got to be worth it hasn't it? And those memories will be good, lasting ones. Enjoy the adventure!

  9. How sweet of Nelly Bo to bring your tulips. You deserve them of course! I hope you'll have a lovely evening. I haven't been to Zurich for a hundred years but when I last there, it was a busy place with lots to do, even late at night. A movie and a nice dinner sound good anytime.

  11. Great Mum! As a Stepmkum to two teenagerts, I understand that's sometimes we say Yes becauae it's good for them to hear the Yes, even if it isn't actually good for them... There are so many No's in their world, I love being able to say Yes.

  15. You are a wonderful mother!
PS... my husband had to stand in line outside in FREEZING weather for 4 hours to get Britney Spears tickets for our (then) 10 yr old daughter.
    Worth it!

  16. I would have done the same thing no doubt about that :-) I have done it years ago when my daughter was crazy about One Direction. it was in Copenhagen and I had a nice trip to Tivoli (fortunately it was just before the summer hollidays!). We were home at 2 o'clock in the night, and I had to go to Work the Next day, not recommended :-) Hope you and the girls had a nice trip.

  19. Oh yes! The things we do for our children! A recently trip comes to mind, (nothing memorable like a concert) but ma-ny hours in the car to take our baby girl some stuff to Uni that she just "had" to have that day. I did manage to finish a sock on that trip, maybe your WIP will progress nicely as well. ; )

  20. Hi Annette, Oh such a wonderful feeling to be able to give your daughter what they long for...I know it well! For me it is now ( oh Mum it really is time to get pregnant I so have to have a baby before I'm 27, do you approve?) "Not now when you rent your house and live in such a small flat you need to have all your savings together for a deposit on a house first" I would love to say yes I think it's a great idea but things aren't right at the moment. ( I feel deflated and miserable that I can't say what she wants to hear). It is wonderful that when they are younger like Nelly Bo. Hope they enjoy the concert, it sounds good fun. I can imagine how excited they will be. For you enjoy your evening too you deserve some pampering.

    Hugs Julie x
