Stitch markers. I have some. Not many, but some. They are jolly orange, apricot, red and green. I bought them because I thought they were pretty. Typical me. I never really used them. But, it is never too late to learn...
This pillow cover project was just about to leap across the finish line when disaster struck... I had counted my stitches wrong!
The backing, which was ready to be joined with the pretty front was missing out on 5 stitches in the width. I did express some nasty words, pulled my hair and frenetically started to count my stitches, only to get lost between distractions of kids calling for Mama or the cat meowing and getting tangled up in my work... Stitch markers... Now I got to use them.
By marking every ten stitches on both pieces I confirmed my disastrous mishap (Oh my! I can't believe this! ALL this work for nothing???) and accepted the fact that some frogging was to take place. And some starting all over.
Well, worst things can happen, right. I better get started if I want this pillow done in anytime soon. Knowing me, who start on multiple projects every other day, this project might just end up on a shelf otherwise and to be truly honest... It is waaay to pretty for that.
So to avoid making the same mistake as me, get yourself some pretty stitch markers and get them to work. I am going to get myself some more for sure and use them very frequently in my designing processes. For sure. I have learned something new, the hard way. The best way to learn.

Ah yes, I have had that very problem..usually starting a foundation row for a throw! The wiggly, worm like length of stitches had me pulling my hair out..... so I invested in some pretty stitch markers and hey presto perfect count every time! Hope the frogging doesn't take too long x

ReplyDeleteInstead of frogging it I think I'd be inclined to crochet a flap for the back large enough for a few buttons to close the pillow cover and make it look like I intended it to be that way :-)

I do not know how to crochet but find my stitch markers invaluable in knitting! Especially when it comes to regular increases. It is frustrating when you have to start over - I do so very frequently - but knitting has taught me the art of patience and I always believe that once you start again it will always be better!

ReplyDeleteIt is a hideous job isn't it? But a necessary one I'm afraid. Like cleaning your house. Dreadful... But... When using the cheerful stitch markers it is suddenly becoming a little bit more fun. Try it.

Oh, the stitch markers have helped me so many times, especially in knitting. I can usually keep up with smaller crochet rows, but they are a great tool! They're super cute too, right?

Hi Lovely Annette - boy do I agree with you. A couple of weekends ago I went on a fairisle knitting workshop and stitch markers were on the list - as usual I was last minute rush and didn't get any but went merrily along without them. I must admit that I thought I could manage pretty well but I didn't and made things harder for myself so now I have been and bought some ready and waiting. It's often the way that we don't learn till we find out the hard way isn't it? Still, a lesson learnt that way is often learnt well, so I'm sure your stitch markers will serve you well!

I'm sitting with a lovely rippled Rowan pure wool rectangle that was going to become a cushion...but it's too small, and I'm all out of yarn :-( Still trying to come up with a solution almost 18 months later.

I cheat and use little mini clothes pins as stitch markers. They're cute and easy to take on and off as long as the wood on the inside is smooth. I'm WAY too lazy to try to keep track in my head and too sloppy to trust otherwise! haha

Couldn't you add a strip/band and some buttons perhaps make it look intentional. I have done that on a couple of pillows I made until I got the hang of the stitch markers.
