Shooting stars & meteor showers

"Mama! This reminds me of when we were looking at the shooting stars!" says Emmy Bo when reading the book
"En Liten Skär Och Alla Bråkiga Bokstäver "av Carin och Stina Wirsén. Lovely illustrated...

Nelly Bo wanted to see the meteor shower. She wanted her sister and brother to see it aswell. Of course we should all look for shooting stars and raining meteors, shouldn't we? It is a great idea, everyone thought.

We cuddled up in the sofas for a looong movie night. Around midnight, after popcorn and ice cream and a couple of funny movies, we all went outside with quilts and pillows in the dark. We walked up the hill behind our house, avoiding cow poop with the help of our flash light, still hearing the cow bells from a distance. We spread out our quilts and laid down on the ground in the grass and stared up at the stars.

Lying there in silence, breathing the fresh night air, hearing the sounds of night animals and looking up into universe was extremely magical. Jay and Nelly Bo side by side on one quilt, me with Luca Bo on one side and Emmy Bo on the other on the other quilt, close together with heads resting on a puffy pillows. Charlie the cat came within a minute or so and joined in. And so the whole family was together and we were one with nature. For real.

We stayed like this for about an hour, staring up in that star filled dark sky. Pointing out the Milky Way and trying to see some star constellations. Quietly talking and pointing out this and that, waiting for some shooting stars. And there were shooting stars. It was so cool. They ripped through the dark blue universe like a thin tip on a sharp knife. Swisch!!! And we were thrilled with excitement, wanting to see more. We didn't see many that night but enough for us to go to bed feeling euforic and very happy inside after experiencing such a great thing. Amazing.

The next evening was the peak of the meteor shower, regarding to some news Jay had read somewhere. We went to bed early and set the clock for 2.00 am as this was apparently the best time for a real meteor shower. I was to tired and stayed in bed but Jay, Luca Bo and Nelly Bo went outside as planned. During their first 20 minutes they saw nothing and then the meteor rain came. Not less than 26 shooting stars were counted in a time period of 25 minutes. I wish I had come with them.

I do regret not getting up that second night but still I live on the memory of lying on the ground up on top of the hill with the people I love the most in the middle of the night. I live on the memory of staring up in the sky and feeling in tune with universe, holding hands with my little ones. It was a magical moment. I think everyone in the family will treasure this moment for a looong looong time.

  4. That was a wonderful story. My husband and I laid on our front walkway and watched the meteor shower. It was a beautiful thing to see. I wasn't brave enough to lay in the pasture but maybe next year...

  7. How lovely. I have a treasured memory of standing on top of the hill opposite our house in the middle of the night, with my family, waiting patiently to see the space station pass overhead. Me and my husband were peering intently at the sky, whilst our kids were running up and down the hill in the exciting darkness. Then my daughter pointed out a 'shooting star' behind the hill - and yes we had been looking in the wrong direction for the space station the whole time! It still makes me giggle! These memories make it all worth while x
