Google alerts - please explain!!!

Hi
This is a shout for some tech information. I have had this Google alert registered for a long while. I keep receiving Google Alerts in my Inbox but I just do not get it... What is the information for? I thougt the idea is to supervise who uses your name, information etc in cyber world. That I could protect my contents with help from Google Alerts. That there would be some kind of link showing where the mentioning has been... but no. I don't get it. I only get a Google Alert with my won link... What kind of help is that? Can someone who understands cyber technology better than me PLEASE explain...

  1. Hello Annette, the best thing you can do is to go on Google and type in "Google Alerts" to see what comes up. I just did that and found this:

I'm sure you can find out all you want that way! Here is what Wikipedia says:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Alerts

I don't understand technology that well myself, but when I don't, I keep doing research until I find something which helps me understand better.

Sorry I can't help you more. Maybe someone else can.
    Have a good day!

  3. Looks like the alert is not for a sighting of your post, but for something your interested in, if you put in a keyword or blog title, it might alert you on that.
Aren't you looking for something like Science Citations - it gives you an indications when you are referenced in research...should be some similar option in cyberworld?

  4. Hi Annette,

Let's see if I can explain this: I work for a certain company and set an alert on Google with the company's name, because I'm interested in finding out what is published on the news about it. I have others about specific terms work related.

So, depending on your definitions, you may be getting only your own posts! I simulated your search but changed it to "my rose valley", result type: "all"; how many: "just the best". This is what I got just for today:

    myrosevalley.blogspot.com/
    my.rosevalleyindia.com/
    www.bloglovin.com/en/blog/1529995/my-rose-valley
Amazon.com: My Rose Valley (A Geneva Book)

You may wish to change your search criteria :)

email me if I can help you in any other way! :)

  5. Google Alerts isn't a perfect tool. Difficult to provide specific advice not knowing exactly how your alert settings are tagged. but, you can always refine your settings. I have several alerts and continually refine them. The more specific you can be, the better the alert will be. For example, an alert on "Quilter" would get you an endless number of alerts, but an alert on "My Rose Valley Quilter" may help to narrow down the search. Just like searching the internet in general, you need to play and figure out the appropriate search criteria and take that logic to Google Alerts.
