I could not just buy a couple or a few. No I had to have the whole selection available at my local yarn shop. And I thought, everybody is talking about Drops Paris cotton yarn and how wonderful it is so this yarn should be just as lovely.
Drops Cotton Light from Garnstudio is a lighter version of Drops Paris and it is a cotton/poly mix. A DK weight yarn in 8ply worked on a 4 mm/US6 hook. Lovely. I thought...
But... I am disappointed. The yarn is spun from 14 strands which makes it loose and keeps splitting and knotting itself when I try to make circles, grannies or mixing different stitches. It frustrates me as I think the result is coming out well, but with constant tumbles I just don't have the patience to work with this yarn. I wanted to make granny square pillows, but now I think I will go for something with just stripes as even the most simple granny square seem to be a fuss to make.
I do love the colors. I do love the feel of this yarn and the result is very soft and smooth but thsi is not a yarn for a beginner or someone like me who wants an easy yarn to work with.
I have to make something out of this beautiful stash and colors but I am not sure of what to make. Any suggestions? I think a baby blanket would be lovely. Or a scarf. Maybe a cowl. Stripy pillow covers? Anything that does not involve mixed stitches...
So, to sum this review up, how many hearts does this yarn get?

No, I am not so overly happy about this purchase and I won't buy this yarn again. But that is me. Maybe you are of another opinion. You should always try something for yourself before you judge it, right? You can buy Drops Cotton Light at Wool Warehouse (UK online shop) and NordicMart (US online shop). I will keep looking for DK weight cotton mix yarn until I find one that I like. After all I don't really regret having the yarn here at home now. It is lovely to display on a shelf and to sit and stare at for hours. Ha ha ha. Only that is worth every penny. :D

hello, I understand your point of view, it ' s interesting yarn, but her string is not good done, sometimes it can be difficult to work with it, bye, ania
ReplyDeletesuch a pity!!!!!!

I understand what you mean it's not as easy as I'd like too! The colours are beautiful and it's incredibly soft, I think it would make great scarfs, it's also easier to crochet in rows although I'm not sure why!
ReplyDeleteI've just put a little bundle of these together for a giveaway I'm doing tomorrow, I'll link this review to it as it will give people a good idea what it's like to work with. Please keep doing these reviews....us newbies need them!!! :) xxx
I agree with you Annette that the yarn splits when you work with it. I've made things from this, potholders, seat covers, stool covers and cotton flannels and they all turned out beautifully and are lasting!! Hope you find the right project. Xo
ReplyDeleteoh, i used to work with drops paris some time ago & i really liked it. the colours of the ligt version are very nice, but i also don´t like loosy yarn... thanks for testing it! i know prefer the school yarn from joker...
ReplyDeleteIt looks a lot like our Vinnis Nikkim, which takes a little getting used to, but it works so beautifully. What a found was that a hook with a roundish head, like Prym, works better; also one size down to what you usually would use.
ReplyDeleteI feel the same as you! I bought some for a project and really did not like a minute of crocheting with it. I gave it away...
ReplyDeleteI found Drops Paris the same as the Light. A bit disappointing when there are so many positive comments out there. But the Light is soft to tough. Hope you find something you like to create with it. x
ReplyDeleteI hate splitty yarn, there is nothing worse then getting it caught every time you pull the hook through the loop. I use James C. Brett Cotton, it's a cotton, acrylic blend 50/50 and its great for crochet, doesn't split and doesn't pill either. Wears really well for both clothes and toys.
ReplyDeleteI had exactly the same experience with the yarn. The colors are lovely, the yarn feels wonderful but it is sort of terrible to work with, it is a pity. The strands that keep popping up seem to suggest I am a sloppy crocheter, which I truly am not, so I threw it away, the little-girls-dress I was making. Such a shame.
ReplyDeleteHi! I totally agree with you Annette! Once I crocheted with this kind of yarn (also with a lots of strands loosing while I worked) and it bored me a lot! So what I did? I finish that crochet and swear to myself "never again!"..! But definitely this colours you show on this post are so delicious I couldn't resist either, like you did! Love your blog, Andreia
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame this yarn isn't as nice to work with as it looks as you're right about there being a lovely colour selection. It does look very splitty from those photos and like it'll be hard work.

I am with you on how annoying it is when yarn splits like that!! I use King Cole Bamboo Cotton and love it. It is a tiny bit splitty, but nothing that would put me off.
ReplyDeleteYou could try using two or three strands together and using a bigger hook? I made a lovely baby blanket using a huge hook (think it's 15mm), and I've made really nice cowl/neckwarmers using a size 10mm hook.
This is the link for the blanket: http://www.aestheticnest.com/2012/03/hoh-in-crochet-easy-baby-afghan.html
And this is the one for the Cowl: http://allaboutami.tumblr.com/post/40104047433/longdoublecrochetcowl
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this yarn. I have had the same experience. I bought it because I needed a cheap(er) alternative to Drops Paris (a yarn that I love working with), but after finishing the project it was intended for (a granny square blanket) I definitely had enough of the splitting and knots.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your review.I also love the colors and soft garns, but I don't like gran to splitin this way.
ReplyDeleteHave you tryed a bigger hook already? Sometimes that is the solution.
With Love, Margaret
Hi Annette what a shame as it does look absolutely gorgeous yarn but what a disappointment. I have done this myself many times and really been annoyed with myself but you have to try something to find this out. I am sure it would make a lovely snuggly blanket. Big hugs to you Annette and thanks for the review, it is really useful.

The yarn is lovely, but I hate it when yarn splits!!! So frustrating! Lots of nice colors though.
ReplyDeleteLoved your previous post too, with the heart necklace and pretty blouse!!

Hi Annette, your review is very useful for crocheters...I knit and crochet and have recently knitted the " Shellseeker" stripey jumper,a fabulous pattern by Heidi Kirrmaier which I purchased off Ravelry.I'm very happy with how it knitted up in the Drops Cotton Light.I chose this yarn as I found the exact colours I wanted and it was so reasonably priced...I had decided to make this my "prototype" then maybe make another in " better" ( more expensive) yarn....but I have started the second Shellseeker in Cotton Light also,as a gift for a friend.
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, the description given for this yarn on the Drops site, does point out that it knits up well, but if used for crochet has a tendency to split.
Love your beautiful colourful blog ...your posts fill me with inspiration and your tutorials are brilliant.
Greetings from SW France.
Best wishes,
Carole x
PS. I think a regular review on yarn would be really useful.
Great to have your review, I tried Rowan Cotton and that was horrendously splitty and very expensive, and I was going to try cotton light as I am totally in love with Drops Extra Fine merino and really want to try the new Drops cotton /merino too, I wonder if that is as splitty as cotton light? One thing you can't deny, it's superb value for money!! Fiona
ReplyDeleteI like the colourers of the wool and it dose look soft too, but it splitting like that would drive me mad.
ReplyDeletegreat review Annette! I know what you mean with the splitting, the Drops Paris is the same I think. I just tend to be a crocheter that doesn't mind much. It's the same with Catania Grande. During create 'n date there were a lot of people who didn't like it bc of the splitting. However, Grande and Paris are both 100% cotton. I am getting very excited to try this yarn now too :). They should pay you for this haha.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely LOVE the colours by the way. Great styling, great combinations. Especially that jeans kind of blue-gray one. Love it.
Projects? Hmmm.... blanket sounds good. Tea pot cozy? The colours remind me of that one with flowers on top, the book 'cute and easy crochet' by Nikki Trench.
Well, enjoy the project. Or just the yarn on the shelf :)
xx
thank you for the review!
ReplyDeletei understand you very much, because i am knitting now an aran sweater for my husband, and the yarn i am using for this project has the same ''problem''. Olympia yarn is spun from 8 strands which makes it loose and keeps splitting and knotting itself when I knit. This loose type of yarns are not for the beginners and not for an very easy knitting or crochet, but the result is much more softer!!! ...and, yes, i do think than your yarn would be great for some stripey baby blanket :-)
I tried this yarn to knit small baby hats. I think it was ok to knit with but the result was a bit slack. When finished, I did wet the hats and layed it down to dry but no. They were so slacky. I was a little bit disappointed. Luckily, my sister in law love them. And her kids love their hats since they seem to be soft, slacky and no itching!
ReplyDeleteI will not buy more of this though..
Love your blog - as always!
A striped blanket would be pretty out of all those great colors. Too bad it splits. I hate it when something like that slows me down and knocks me out of my rhythm. Thanks for the review. I've seen a lot of pretty things made with this yarn.
ReplyDeleteI was anxious to read your review...I bought some at a shop in California. I too had the problem of constant splitting, and I will not invest in any more of that yarn. What I am LOVING is the Drops Baby Merino. It is HEAVEN, although I have come across some tied together knots in my skeins. I am wondering if Drops is not the quality I had hoped it would be.
ReplyDeleteThe last bunch of Drops Paris I bought was also very dissapointing. Kept splitting and tangling up and left me so frustrated. I think a letter of feedback is due to Garnstudio.
ReplyDeleteI found this impossible to crochet with...however I knitted a whole baby blanket for my beautiful nephew instead. It does take a little more concentration to work with but the colours are lovely, the yarn is so soft and it washes beautifully time and again. My super fussy sister loved it and the price is amazing. So, recommended for knitting but not crochet.
ReplyDeleteI have to say I am very happy with my Drops Paris yarn, It does split if you are trying to do it whilst watching telly so I doo it whilst my man is watching football instead we get to talk but I dont have to take my eye off my work lol. It is lovely and has a great weight now the blanket is growing so will be super warm.
ReplyDeleteI am happy with mine, but sorry that so many of you are not!! xx
I agree with you! I purchased this yarn in lots of colours but I am disappointed, it's a real pain to crochet with because of the splitting. I thought it was just me!
ReplyDeleteMaybe you could knit something with it? This kind of yarn won't work well when chrocheting, because they are loose and hard to work with the hook.
ReplyDeleteGot my hands on these...Gerlene (my sis, up in comments) sent me hers...I kept the one I tried, might complete a washcloth or two, the rest I gave away...
ReplyDeleteI know this is an old post, but should someone find this review about Drops cotton yarn, I found a solution that works for me. I too have struggled with their multi-ply yarns splitting, but found myself returning to these products again and again anyway...simply because their color palettes are irresistible!
ReplyDeleteI was finally able to use up all of my Drops Paris by using the Clover Amour hooks. The hooks are SO smooth to work with that I find myself breezing through an array of "splitty" yarn easily!
Also, as an aside...be sure to use the hook size that works for your own personal tension instead of what's recommended on the yarn packaging, or crochet pattern you're using (if possible) because that makes a big difference as well.
I just came across this and I like to add that I agree with Katie. I also used the Clover Amour hook and the splitting was not that bad, it was manageable and I might add that I am more of a beginner so that should say something:). I was able to make a nice blanket and some kids purses out of this yarn.
ReplyDeleteI wish I'd read the comments about this yarn before I bought 16 balls to crochet a baby blanket! I am struggling with it; I have to finish it as I can't afford to just give it away. Colours are lovely, I agree, but I have to concentrate on every stitch and undo a lot. I won't buy this again.
ReplyDeleteI too, am very disappointed in this yarn. I bought for a specific project and although the project is shaping up the nicely, the yarn has been a total headache. I definitely will not be restocking this one.
