It is one thing to learn to crochet as a child, to experiment with colored stripes, joining new colors in every row and see how a colorful scarf is emerging in front of your eyes at age 11... That is play on high level. That is pride of making something "all by myself".
It is another thing when it comes to sewing in those ends... That is kind of fiddly, annoying and straight out B O R I N G!!! As I have brutally been told in that pre-teen tone some of you might know... So the colorful scarf was put away in frustration and anger in basket, furthest back on her book shelf and has been hidden for months. Until now. I found it.
I love it. I know she loves it, the girl who was 11 when she started but now has reached 12. And I will sew in those ends one by one because I am her mother and I do these things for her. And I will ask her to continue and make the most wonderful scarf ever. On one condition. That she will sew in every end after every row instead of leaving 50 yarn ends dangling around for me to sew in at a later occassion. This scarf will be magical the day it is finished. I hope she will work through the frustration and unwillingness of doing B O R I N G stuff and see the joy in the accomplishment when it is done.
Kärlek

You are a very good mother, Annette. That is indeed a boring job.

She has done and amazing job so far. Gorgeous - and her tension looks so even - that in itself is quite an accomplishment! I know what you mean with the ends - my elder daughter also loves to crochet - she recently made a stunning groovyghan for her best friend's birthday - left four thousand ends to sew in (and mom ended up doing it!!). By the way Annette we moms never outgrow doing things for our "babies" - my daughter is 23!!. Thank You for a beautiful blog - recently started following you and I love your stories and colourful work!
ReplyDeleteI cannot wait to teach my granddaughters to crochet!!!! I love that your daughter is doing it!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd I love that you sewed in those ends!
It is what we Mama's do. We help our babies!

Lovely colourful scarf, I am sure she will enjoy and maybe she will do some patience lesson :)
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!

What a beautiful scarf and I know just how much I loathe it so I can completely understand why a 12 year old won't want to do it. This is what mothers are for, she will love you even more one day when she remembers her first big project and the fact that mum spent hours weaving ends in. This is what mothers are for, right?! Xoxo
ReplyDeleteOh my Annette, you really should finish this scarf! It's wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI'm crocheting a blanket in stripes right know and i'm thinking about leaving
the ends hanging down, i'm not sure yet.
I've learned myself to sew in every end of every new colour row or finished granny
immediately, it works perfectly.
Have a beautiful weekend xx
good mamma!!!!
ReplyDeletethis scarf is gorgeous right now!!!!
xxxxx Ale
happy weekend!!!!
My Nan used to do wll the boring bits of knitting for me. If I had a garment where the from was patterned but the back plain and B O R I N G, then she would do it for me. She also used to do all the sewing up and picking up around the neck etc. How I miss that. Whenever I am doing things like that now I remember and am so grateful she did it for me. Who knows, if I'd had to do the boring bits I may never have progressed and perservered with crafting. Mumu's and Nannys are so important. xxx
ReplyDeleteShe is going to be thrilled - good job both of you! Jane x
ReplyDeleteYou can show her how to weave in ends as you go like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gk3r-4vZ_mY
ReplyDeleteI do it all the time and I love it! It's also possible to weave in ends as you go in knitting :-)
Like I have said time and again, "They can put a man on the moon but they can't invent a tool to weave in ends!?" In a moment of boredom and frustration, I grabbed a smaller crochet hook, hooked it under a few stitches, grabbed the end and pulled it through. Voila! Instant weaving! I posted a photo tutorial here: http://www.chrissiecrafts.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/kicking-off-cal.html
ReplyDeleteHope it helps! Chrissie x
I think that's a great solution. You can't keep on doing it for her as it IS part of the process, but you are showing her a manageable solution for the future. Incidentally I love sewing ends in - almost more than the crochet!
ReplyDeleteIt is a beauty and little Miss 12 year old should be so proud, but who at the age of 12 or 49 for that matter wants to sew in ends?
ReplyDeletehugs,
Meredith
Too late now, but have you thought of laying the thread along the row you are crocheting and crochet over the end as you go along. I always do that and it saves so much time
ReplyDeleteShe does beautiful work and I hope she finishes it. I have to agree with her tho - doing the ends IS boring!
ReplyDeleteSweet post! She'll be so proud of herself when it's finished. I too have a fit when I have so many ends to weave in. :) I adore pre-teens. I have 3 grandchildren in that age range and I love them so much....attitude and all! lol Hope your day is sunny! penny x
ReplyDeleteI had to smile when reading your post! I'm looking over at my latest project and thinking it would look really lovely if the ends were sewn in. Yes - B O R I N G!! xx
ReplyDeleteOh! Tell her auntie Esther says that he scarf looks pretty damn good. Those are some good stitches for a 11 yo!
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty nice of you. When I learned to crochet, I was taught to cut the ends off! I didn't even know that you should weave them in. I wish I'd learned that in the first place so you're doing the right thing to teach her now.
ReplyDeleteWhaow what a symphony of gorgeous colours. What a lovely mum you are to sew in all the ends. I actually LOVE sewing in the ends as I go because it means the work looks so pretty as you continue working on it. Crochet hook and tapestry needle belong together! Carol x
ReplyDeleteLove the scarf and how sweet of you to finish all those treats.
ReplyDeleteI do not blame your daughter at alI.
I don't like it either but it must be done. You are a great mother to teach your daughter how to crochet.

The ends....big sigh... :-) But what a nice scarf she made. My liitle one wants to learn "real crochet"" as well (meaning with a hook instead of fingercrochet) but I find it pretty hard to teach her. Maybe she's a bit to young, she's five. I guess her little chubby fingers aren't ready yet. In the meantime I have visions of us settling in on the couch and hook something up together. :-)
ReplyDeleteHave a nice hooky time together!
Annette it will be so gorgeous when it is done and she is wearing it and looking lovely - what a fab Mum you are Annette, she will remember this when she is teaching her own little ones. Have a fabulous day
ReplyDeleteBig hugs
Dorothy

Hey Annette,
ReplyDeleteyou are a wonderful mom! :-D And this scarf will be soooo beautiful!
Alice
After experiencing this confusing bit I straight away sew the ends. It's paramount if I ever want to finish my projects
ReplyDeleteOh to be 11 again! Imagine how many more blankets we could make!
ReplyDeleteps. We are fitting a new SWEDISH wood floor!!!!!!
