When I left Sweden in 2001 and moved abroad, I pretty much left it all behind me, in banana boxes. It has been stored at my Dad's place and at my brother's summer house and now 14 years later I get the chance to look through those boxes. A complete dining set in rocking 80's black style is nothing I will keep, but somehow it is comforting to see it all and remember my past. The circle is closed. I have a place. My place. To store my memories from life before entering the rest of the world and leaving it all behind.
My Mum's old kitchen sofa is now on MY veranda. This summer we plan to just "camp" in OUR house, but some small things can be done. Like the veranda maybe. I'm thinking to paint the walls white, put some beautiful rag rugs in, build window sills and add geraniums in the windows. Maybe I'll paint the kitchen sofa Swedish blue and add on a matching new fabric with flowers on the seating pad (I would die for this Gucci fabric but it is way out of my budget... I'll find something similar and less pricy...), and with a cup of coffee and a yarn basket next to me I can imagine myself sitting there for many hours.
After everyone left to go back to work and school, me and the kids stayed for an extra day all alone. We went on an adventure with the bikes and explored the different docks and a small creek in the woods. Looked at our neighbors cottages and talked about what we want for OUR house. We had a lovely time and ended our evening on the local pizzeria Ankaret in Väddö.
I own a summer house. I really do. And it makes me feel so good! Many happy moments will be collected here. I can't wait for summer to come!

ReplyDeleteWe do too!! We call it the Cabin because we go all year round now that we have a log burner. I promised myself that everything in it should be made, upcycled or recycled so save stuff going into landfil - you can see it here.
