Let me tell you the story about this Maybelle Square. A couple of months ago, or even longer, this idea of turning the Maybelle flower into a crochet square started to take form in my head. I had a few goes without luck. I am telling you, you do NOT want to see my terrible trials... I left the idea to sit for a while and one day one of my readers, a Dutch girl named Jane, sent me a picture of how she had turn the Maybelle flowers into squares in a blanket. I instantly contacted her to ask if she could give me some hints how she had made her squares. Within a day or two she replied with some instructions and she gave me the magic number - 4.
I have tweaked her initial instructions, as I always tend to put my own twist on things (typical me). However, this Maybelle Square was born and I am loving it. All credits go to Jane who does not have her own blog and who wants to stay anonymous, but I truly hope you read this. It was the magical number 4 that made it all work out. Thank you dear Jane!
I know many of you have waited for this pattern so here we go. Excuse my terrible hand drawn crochet symbols, but this is better than nothing for you who prefer a visual pattern.
I have written the pattern in UK/US terms. I have used Tilda yarn on a 3mm / C-D (US) hook. A Svensk version finns här.
Row 1
Find the pattern for the Maybelle Crochet Flower here, picture tutorial here, and when you have your Maybelle Flower you are ready to get started with the square.
Join a new yarn at the top of a petal and chain 5 (counts as 1dc/1sc + ch4), *make a 1htr/1hdc in the valley between two petals, chain 4, 1dc/1sc in top stitch on next petal, chain 4*, repeat * * until end of row. Join with slip stitch in first chain made on first petal.
Row 2
This row is worked into the chain spaces: Slip stitch into first chain space, make ch2 (counts as first htr/hdc) - 3htr/3hdc (a total of 4htr/hdc in same chain space), ch1, 4htr/4hdc in next chain space, ch1.
Now we work the corner: *In next chain space make 1htr/1hdc - 2tr/2dc - 2dtr/2tr, ch2, in following chain space make 2dtr/2tr - 2tr/2dc - 1htr/1hdc, ch1. In next chain space make 4htr/4hdc, ch1, 4htr/4hdc in next chain space, ch1*, repeat * * 2 times.
Make one more last corner: In next chain space make 1htr/1hdc - 2tr/2dc - 2dtr/2tr, ch2, in following chain space make 2dtr/2tr - 2tr/2dc - 1htr/1hdc, ch1. Join row with slip stitch in top chain of first 2 chains made.
Row 3
Ch2 (counts as first htr/hdc), 1htr/1hdc in next 2 stitches, skip 1stitch, 1tr/1dc in space between clusters, *skip 1 stitch, htr/1hdc in next 3 stitches, 1tr/1dc in space between clusters, 1htr/1hdc in next 4 stitches, skip 1 stitch , make 2tr/2dc - 1ch - 2tr/2dc in same corner space, skip 1 stitch, 1htr/1hdc in next 4 stitches, 1tr/1dc in space between clusters, 1htr/1hdc in next 3 stitches, skip 1 stitch, 1tr/1dc in space between cluster*], repeat * * 2 times.
Finish your row with: Skip 1 stitch, 1htr/1hdc in next 3 stitches, 1tr/1dc in space between clusters, 1htr/1hdc in next 4 stitches, skip 1stitch, make 2tr/2dc - ch - 2tr/2dc in same corner space, skip 1 stitch, 1htr/1hdc in next 4 stitches, 1tr/1dc in space between clusters. Join with a slip stitch in top chain of first 2 chains made. Cut yarn and fasten of gently.

They look gorgeous in those colours of yours. . .

Thank you so much for posting this. I have flowers galore and have become frustrated trying to turn them into squares. I can't wait to get started.
ReplyDeleteHej! Tusen tack för mönstret!
ReplyDeleteNow my next project has changed again!! My daughter needs a new blanket, she'll love this! Thanks for posting this!
ReplyDeleteWonderful tutorial, I love how you've laid it out. Really very nice and clear, beautifully done. Then there is the squares themselves, which are also absolutely gorgeous. A whole blanket in those would be so delicious! I'd love to make one myself but if I take anything else on at the moment I think my head might actually explode! Well done to you and to Jane for putting you on the right track! :)

What size crochet hook? I'm in the U.S.
ReplyDeleteHi Darline
DeleteTry a C or D hook on a light DK weight yarn, 50g = 160 yards. The yarn I am using is Tilda, A Swedish cotton/acrylic mix, which I will be selling here on my blog soon. I am waiting for a big order within the next few weeks but have a few balls left in my Yarn Shop page if you are interested.

Thanks Annette - I am so excited to make my flowers into squares. Your tutorial is perfect - so well written - thanks again.

Hej Annette!
Lillemor Carlsson
These are beautiful!!! Thank you very much for sharing!

ReplyDeleteHej Annette! A lovely and colourful blog with really useful info. I am sometimes a bit confused by the differing crochet terms I see as an English crafter now living in Sweden not used to reading "ett mönster på svenska" or seeing US terms on various international websites. Is it ok if I share this terminology table on my own blog and facebook side?

ReplyDeleteI don't remember where I first found you as I have had you on my favourites for a while but I'm guessing it was as a result of using Attic 24 as it is because of Lucy and my addiction to her site that I have found so many others and had such a lovely 2013. I live in England.

ReplyDeleteSara Wilson shared it with the group. I love this pattern & will be making this soon.
Can't wait to try this! I have just started making the flowers and notice the center hole (10 chain) is a little larger than yours seem to be, even when I tried Sport weight yarn. Thinking of making a baby blanket with these. Did you perhaps tweak the number of chains you used in the center hole?
ReplyDeleteStill a little new to crochet, trying to keep up with all you!
-Alissa
Hi Alissa
DeleteI hope you come back to read this. To answer your question: No tweaking at all. I follow the pattern religiously. If you feel the hole in the middle is to big you can always try and make a magic ring instead of the 10chain ring as a foundation ring. Because of the amount of trebles worked into the ring it will always be a little hole in the middle, probably about 1/4 inch big. Good luck.
Annette
I have been following your pattern and y hole in the middle is quite large too, about 2cm. I am using 8ply with a 4.00mm hook.
DeleteHi Annette,

ReplyDeleteHello Annette, I am making an afghan using the Maybelle Flower Squares in many colours, with white border. Can you suggest the best joining method for the nicest looking result? xx Pat
ReplyDeleteThanks! I am in Kentucky, USA
ReplyDeleteI am from the us..and not sure about the tr st...all the videos I watch on it are different...how many chains do I do before I tr?
ReplyDeleteHello
DeleteIf you are from the States you should watch videos and follow patterns that are performed in US terms.
This is how you do a US treble:
1.Yarn over hook twice, then insert hook into the stitch.
2.Yarn over hook and draw yarn through stitch - (there are four loops on the hook).
3. Yarn over hook and draw through two loops, (there are now three loops remaining on the hook).
4. Yarn over hook and draw through two loops. (there are now two loops remaining on the hook).
5. Again, yarn over hook and draw through the last two loops on the hook (there is now one loop remaining.)
6. This completes one treble crochet.
When you start a row with US treble stitches you start with making 4 chains. A treble stitch is, with other words, 4 chains high.
Hope this was helpful.
1 or 2 squares a day and I'll put this together for Christmas.
ReplyDeleteThank you Jane for sharing your wisdom and to you Annette
for sharing with us this wonderful pattern.
Now all I need is to know the yarn you used and the colors...
so... I'm gonna read through all your comments. ;-D
Hi Annette,
ReplyDeleteI am going to make a small lap robe for my friend but I have a question: with your good photos and clear instructions, I am sure I can complete the Maybelle Rose and the square around it, but I would appreciate if you could tell me how to crochet a granny edging onto the finished Maybelle square. I love your work and I will be returning to your site often. You do lovely handwork

ReplyDeleteThank for the easy to follow instruction. I already started a blanket. Hope to finish soon. How do you prefer to join the squares?
ReplyDeleteHello

http://myrosevalley.blogspot.ch/2013/10/how-to-join-maybelle-squares.html
I hope this was helpful. Good luck with your blanket.
Annette
Hi i am having a bit of a problem , after the last corner what stitchs do i use before finishing off. The paragraph after row 3 Skip 1st, 3htr/hdc in next 3 sts, 1tr/dc in space between clusters, 4htr/hdc in next 4 sts, skip 1st, 2tr/dc - ch - 2 tr/dc in same corner space, skip 1st, 4htr/hdc in next 4 sts, 1tr/dc in space between clusters. Join with a sl st in top chain of first 2 chains made. Cut threads and fasten of gently. do i do the above to finish off.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!

Hello,
ReplyDeleteI was wondering if I could translate in Greek your instructions on the Maybelle square and post them on my newly created blog.
Best regards,
Eleni
this is so beautiful. Thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to make it.
Thank you so much for this square for the maybelle, I tried it yesterday and it is great.
ReplyDeleteHai Annette! What a beautiful pattern you had there! I am working on it now. I am a little bit lost on row 3:
ReplyDeleteCh2, 2htr/hdc in next 2 sts...
does it mean 2 hdc in 1 stitch or 1 hdc in 1 stitch?
sorry i am a crochet beginner.
Thank you so much in advance.
Wish you have a very beautiful days~
Hi Leanne
DeleteThank you for your message. Row 3 should be: Ch2, 1htr/hdc in next 2 sts...
I have changed my way of writing patterns since I published this. I should change that. Thanks for letting me know and I hope this make sense now. Look at the chart I have drawn around, it will make it easier for your to understand. I will update my pattern today.
God luck
Annette
Hola !!!

Tengo un blog, en el cual cuelgo mis trabajos.... (http://elracodelamarga.blogspot.com.es/) por si quieres pasarte a verlos...
Ayer mismo hice una entrada con tu preciosa flor Maybelle....

ReplyDeleteLovely pattern!!
ReplyDeleteHowever, for row 1, in the photo tutorial and the illustrated instructions, there appears to be a "ch 4" after "sc in the top stitch of next petal" that is missing from the written instructions. Is that correct?
Hi Sarah
DeleteThanks for your eagle eye. The error is corrected. Happy Holidays.
Xxx
I am having a very hard time following the pattern. Do you have a written one in just English terms?
DeleteHi Rebecca
DeleteSorry to hear you are struggling with the pattern. It is all written in English terms. Before the side slash (/) it is in UK terms and after it is in US terms. You also have illustrations with the pictures. Try again! I'm sure you can do it. Go slow...
Best regards

Thank you for sharing such a lovely pattern however I am simply lost on Row 3 (the last row that makes it into a square). I have mulled over this for days, tried sketching it out but cannot see the pattern. Can you please perhaps sketch a quarter of the image for me of the final row showing where this works against the previous row. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteHi
DeleteSorry for late reply, must have missed your comment somehow. There is a sketch/illustration of the third row on the above picture of Row 3 already, side by side/against row 2 of the crocheted square in the picture. Try again, good luck.
Xx
Love it!!! I will give it a try, thank you so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteAnnette, I am brand new at crocheting and have 91 maybelle flowers that now I want to turn into squares and then a blanket for my new granddaughter. But I cannot read patterns yet. Could you make make a video making the square then joining them into a blanket. Your work is beautiful. Wanted to work on it during Hurricane Florence.
ReplyDeleteHi Bobbie
DeleteThank you for your message. Sounds fantastic to have so many Maybelle flowers ready to square and join. I'm sorry but I son't make video tutorials at all, never have, and even if I would like to, I just don't have the time for the moment. When searching on You Tube I found following that might be helpful:

Annette
I have made a massive mistake! I have just made 40 flowers with only 6dc for the peddles instead of 7. Should I just connect between 3 and 3? Or will that make everything a bit off in the end? I'm so angry at myself now :(
ReplyDeleteHi
DeleteThank you for your message. I'm sorry to hear you've made this mistake. But remember, crochet is a very forgiving art form. I'm sure you can find a way to make up for it. As you mentioned, try and make the slip stitch between the 3rd and 4th double crochet stitch in your pebble and see what it looks like. Should work. I haven't tried myself but it sounds realistic. Let me know how it goes.
Warm wishes and good luck
Annette
Thanks Annette I did try it and seems to work fine! Just freaked out a little after making so many flowers.
