Sweet Heart Crochet Pattern

Well, summer came for a day or two but soon after the snow started to fall again and after that only rain rain rain... What is it with this weird weather? We never seem to get the chance to wiggle our toes in lush summer green grass on a hot summer day... So what can we do when the rain continues and the sun seem to have gone a long term vacation? Lets make some hearts, shall we?

I came up with the pattern for my sweet crochet heart when sitting in a skate park watching my boy Luca Bo risk his life (!!!) down the ramp and over the jumps. My first attempt was a bit wobbly but my idea was clear... After a few tweaks I got it right and it is a very simple pattern. I made a cute door garland and then my daughter Nelly Bo (age 11) wanted to make some. She quickly got the Sweet Heart bug and made all the hearts in the above and below picture. Lets get started.

SWEET HEART CROCHET PATTERN
MATERIALS
• Sport weight/4ply cotton (I am using my delightful Tilda yarn which is heaven for this project. You can find it in My Rose Valley Yarn Shop.)
• Crochet hook 2,5 mm (Tilda recommends 3mm)
• Tapestry needle to weave in ends
• A pair of scissors

ABBREVIATIONS (UK terms)
ch - chain
dc - double crochet
spike dc- spike double crochet*
htr - half treble

tr - treble

dtr - double treble

sl st - slip stitch
*spike double crochet = a dc worked into the stitch 2 rows below the "normal" stitch.

START: Ch 6, sl st in 1st ch to make a ring and ch5 which counts as your first tr followed by 2ch for a corner.

ROW 1: Make *3tr-2ch (corner)* into the ring, rep ** two times into the ring to make a square (same as starting a granny square). Join this row with a sl st in the 3rd ch of the first 3ch you made, see arrow in left picture above.

ROW 2: Ch3 and work the following stitches in your corner: 1tr-ch2-2-tr.

ROW 2: Make *1tr in next 3 stitches,  2tr-2ch-2tr (corner), rep ** two more times, make 1tr in next 3 stitches, join in top ch of the first 3ch made, see arrow in left picture. (Stitch count: 7 tr on each side of your square just like a solid granny square).

ROW 2: You have made a solid granny square. This is the body of your heart. Lets make the curves. First you make sl st in the next stitch and in the corner.

ROW 3: Make 11 dtr in the 4th stitch from corner, count from the left which is easier. You can now see the curve appear.

ROW 3: Make a sl st in the next corner, 1spike dc in the corner 2 rows below (see right picture).

ROW 3: Make another sl st in the corner of previous row (left picture). Make 11 dtr in the 4th stitch from corner (see right picture).

ROW 3: Ain't that cute? Join with a sl st in the next corner (see left picture) followed by a sl st in the next stitch for stability.

FINISH: Cut your yarn and use your tapestry needle to finish off your work. Stitch from the front to the back in the next stitch, massage the stitch a bit for a smooth finish. Fasten off on the back of your heart.

Finished. You have made your first Sweet Crochet Heart. If anything is unclear please let me know.
