First Of Advent

Pattern: Wilma's Winter Set by me.

Everyone slept in on Sunday morning and I was first up at 8 am. I immediately started to prepare some Christmas porridge. Soon after Emmy Bo came downstairs and we took out the advent chandelier. Candles, moss and mini toadstools. That is pretty much all you need. And the traditional advent chandelier of course.  Later we continued to put up decorations while listening to Christmas carols.

We walked the woods behind the house in the afternoon, my littlest girl, me and Jay, then there was tea and ginger cookie house making time. It was our first attempt on building a ginger cookie house. A store bought set from IKEA had to do. It worked out pretty good, but I think we have to work on the icing a bit. We struggled to get the right consistency and found it really hard to make swirls and pretty decorations. Any tips? Maybe we need at real piping tool? Make a special icing?

This morning Luca and I lit the first advent candle while having breakfast. Everyone else fast asleep as we are the early birds here. 6.30 am we get up and 7.30 am he is off to school. I enjoy those quiet mornings in the dark. Especially now when lights are in the house making it all cozy and warm.

Happy First Advent everyone and may your week be a really good one. Do you have an advent chandelier as well? Or what is your tradition?

  1. Aah I love your Christmas rituals!
Last year I grabbed a vintage square cake tin for my advent candles, camouflaged it a bit with rosemary. This year I wanted to get an old bundt tin and I didn't get to it! Maybe tomorrow :-)

    1. Hi Stel
I love my Swedish Christmas rituals too!!! This is by far my favorite time of the year. The vintage square cake tin with rosemary sounds fantastic. I can only imagine the beautiful smell too. I'm inspired to bring herbs into my home as compliment to the pine. Happy Christmas Build Up my dear.

  3. For the first time doing it I say it looks great. It's one of those traditional baked items that demands experience, technique and icing decoration know-how. Try next time try decorating each wall lying flat and leave overnight to dry and harden. Next year's house will be even better!

    1. Amore,
That is a very clever idea. Decorate the pieces before assembling. You are so smart. got another one to play with later on. It can only get better. :)

  4. Hi Annette, Isn't it wonderful to have these traditions that the family past down. Next Saturday my daughter and I will go to the Etsy Christmas craft fair and in the afternoon put up the decorations. Even at 24 she loves going through the decoration box, remembering the different times that we had each piece and why we bought it. There are even some very old, dog eared angels and other bits that she made when she was in playschool, so they must be 20 years old now. We always have a chuckle at them as they have bits hanging off and have seen better days!! We listen to a very old album of Johnny Mathis christmas songs which my mum and dad used to play when I was a little girl, it brings back so many memories. We have some stollen and maybe a glass of something and exchange christmas cards. On the 10th and 11th of december Hannah and I are going to Bath for the weekend and will visit the xmas market sited by the cathedral where they have little huts with lots of nice crafty bits for sale and buskers singing. No doubt that will make us in the festive mood. Hugs Julie xx

    1. Dear Julie
What a wonderful read. I get all warm and fussy inside of your Christmas rituals described. And those old handmade-by-little-hands decorations that we often might not want to put on window display are after all the most precious ones. The last few years I have come up with a great solution for them, hanging them on my pine wrapped curtain pole in the living room. I'll show you when they are up. It is perfect.
Enjoy your markets, Christmas prep and hot drinks. I shall look into that Christmas record. I love Christmas tunes.

  5. Rör ihop Äggvita, florsocker och lite ättika. Gör en sprits av bakplåtspapper. Kristyren ska vara ganska hård. /Eva
