Sweet Heart Crochet Pattern

Well, summer came for a day or two but soon after the snow started to fall again and after that only rain rain rain... What is it with this weird weather? We never seem to get the chance to wiggle our toes in lush summer green grass on a hot summer day... So what can we do when the rain continues and the sun seem to have gone a long term vacation? Lets make some hearts, shall we?

I came up with the pattern for my sweet crochet heart when sitting in a skate park watching my boy Luca Bo risk his life (!!!) down the ramp and over the jumps. My first attempt was a bit wobbly but my idea was clear... After a few tweaks I got it right and it is a very simple pattern. I made a cute door garland and then my daughter Nelly Bo (age 11) wanted to make some. She quickly got the Sweet Heart bug and made all the hearts in the above and below picture. Lets get started.

SWEET HEART CROCHET PATTERN
MATERIALS
• Sport weight/4ply cotton (I am using my delightful Tilda yarn which is heaven for this project. You can find it in My Rose Valley Yarn Shop.)
• Crochet hook 2,5 mm (Tilda recommends 3mm)
• Tapestry needle to weave in ends
• A pair of scissors

LEVEL

Easy

STITCHES
Basic stitches

ABBREVIATIONS (UK terms)
ch -
chain
dc - double crochet
spike dc- spike double crochet*

htr - half treble

tr - treble

dtr - double treble

sl st - slip stitch
*spike double crochet = a dc worked into the stitch 2 rows below the "normal" stitch.

For Swedish version click here. Svensk version här

START: Ch 6, sl st in 1st ch to make a ring and ch5 which counts as your first tr followed by 2ch for a corner.

ROW 1: Make *3tr-2ch (corner)* into the ring, rep ** two times into the ring to make a square (same as starting a granny square). Join this row with a sl st in the 3rd ch of the first 3ch you made, see arrow in left picture above.

ROW 2: Ch3 and work the following stitches in your corner: 1tr-ch2-2-tr.

ROW 2: Make *1tr in next 3 stitches,  2tr-2ch-2tr (corner), rep ** two more times, make 1tr in next 3 stitches, join in top ch of the first 3ch made, see arrow in left picture. (Stitch count: 7 tr on each side of your square just like a solid granny square).

ROW 2: You have made a solid granny square. This is the body of your heart. Lets make the curves. First you make sl st in the next stitch and in the corner.

ROW 3: Make 11 dtr in the 4th stitch from corner, count from the left which is easier. You can now see the curve appear.

ROW 3: Make a sl st in the next corner, 1spike dc in the corner 2 rows below (see right picture).

ROW 3: Make another sl st in the corner of previous row (left picture). Make 11 dtr in the 4th stitch from corner (see right picture).

ROW 3: Ain't that cute? Join with a sl st in the next corner (see left picture) followed by a sl st in the next stitch for stability.

FINISH: Cut your yarn and use your tapestry needle to finish off your work. Stitch from the front to the back in the next stitch, massage the stitch a bit for a smooth finish. Fasten off on the back of your heart.

Finished. You have made your first Sweet Crochet Heart. If anything is unclear please let me know.
I am sure you won't stop at making one. These hearts are so useful, the sky is the limit. It would be fun to hear what you will make out of yours. Have fun making your Sweet Hearts.

  1. Dare I start making the hearts? I am loving the flowers so much. I need to get my hands on some more sport weight yarn though. I didn't like them nearly as well in the worsted.

  14. Hi! Back to the sport-weight yarn question ... what is it?

I asked this the other day and got a blank look. Granted, I was in the yarn section of a fabric store when I asked the question, but I swear there was no one who could point me to something called sport weight.

Would the label indicate a particular ply (like 2-ply)? And what hook size might be good?

    Thanks a bunch!

    3. Hi
This links gives you a lot of great information on yarn weighhts and hook sizes internationally:

      http://www.woolwarehouse.co.uk/needle-size-yarn-weight-information

I used a 3mm hook, C or 2 in US. Sports weight is everything form a 4-5ply yarn. Use a hook that is recommended by the yarn you are using and that suits your tension.

      Best regards
      Annette

  25. I love your blog. You are right...hearts are so much fun and easy to make. I usually make a couple each day because they make me smile! I started a FB page about spreading love...a pay-it-forward kind of movement where people can give away the little crochet hearts that I make to someone in need of some extra love. http://coffeeandlilacs.com/you-are-loved/
Take a peek, if you wish. Best to you, Annette.

  27. Hej Annette!

  36. Such a sweet website—and lovely hearts. You must be happy that your girl has gotten hooked on crocheting, too. :~) Thank you for the idea of a garland and the clear directions and photos. I've made my first heart and crocheted around it with a contrasting color, then sewed it to a square that will be sewn together with many others for blankets sent to a cold part of South Africa. Here come many more squares with hearts!

  46. These hearts are very appealing. What size hook should I use?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I used hook size 3 mm. It depends of course of the yarn. you should choose a hook size that fits the yarn you use.

  47. Hi. I found your pattern earlier this month and used it to make 12 red hearts for my parents' ruby wedding anniversary party. My mum loved them! She wants to turn them into something, she doesn't know what yet but if you're interested, I'll update when she makes a decision.

  48. Loving your tutorial. I especially like the clear photos.
I am self taught and have been crocheting for about 50 years. My terms don't always "match" the printed terms and the photos really help.
    Thanks!

  49. Hej!

  50. I believe your written instructions left out the two TR into the ring that complete the square once joined to the ch5 that begins the square. Once I looked at the picture, it was clear.

  53. I just stumbled on this pattern and am hoping to make different sizes. How many stitches would I need to increase on each row? I'm thinking of using crochet cotton and connecting these different sizes as doilies or table clothes.
