Finally - Christmas countdown begins!

It is that time of the year when I just walk around waiting, waiting, waiting... For the last date of November and for 1st of Advent to occur. Because that is the time when I start the countdown for Christmas. Stores and media might have had Christmas since the beginning of October but not me. I patiently pace around the house waiting until this weekend, no matter how tempting it is to start earlier.

This year I am enjoying it even more. I feel more prepared, more structured, more in phase with it all. The house is somehow tidy and nice ( a result of being unemployed and around all the time...) and that makes for a great start. The kids were in school yesterday and I put on my favorite Christmas record - Michael Buble's Christmas album of course - and got started with my five big Christmas boxes from the attic.

Usually this momentum is done WITH the kids and it quickly turns into disaster as things are spread around the living room floor in pure ecstasy and I struggle to get anything done properly, but this time... Oh my, just me and Buble dancing around and slowly putting it all in place. And when Nelly Bo came home from school and saw it all she screamed of joy from the top of her lungs and we jumped up and down together in a big hug. A moment to remember ( I don't get to hug her that very often...) and it is good to have someone who shares my great love for this festive season.

This is a slow process, I do a little at the time but just to wire some pine garland around the curtain pole made  my living room super cozy.

Today I'll go to the thrift market to look for some vintage Christmas decoration bargains like that box with the vintage Christmas balls. And this afternoon we bake ginger cookies to spread the smell of Christmas in the house. What about you all? Have you started yet? Are you enjoying it? Are you relaxed or totally stressed out?

  1. Oh, what a beautiful room! Beautiful decorations for Christmas :) I also like this time of waiting. For me tomorrow starts cleaning and change of curtains and pillows. I would like to sew new ornaments and pillows. Also listen to the album Michael Buble and Puppini Sisters and other jazz carols.
    Greetings form Poland :)

  6. Advent is traditionally a time of waiting and fasting. Only then do you have the 12 full days of Christmas. Sadly, people start celebrating too soon and then it's all over on boxing day! People start the feast early so by the time Christmas has come, they have already eaten all the turkey (probably had several Christmas dinners including the office one) and are pretty fed up with it. The tree used not to go up until the day before Christmas and taken down the day after the epiphany - the last day of Christmas. Even people who keep their tree up tend to take it down on the 6th instead of the 7th. Whoever heard of waiting until the guests arrived to the party and instead of inviting them in to celebrate, disbanded and threw away all the decorations instead? I prefer it the old way and no I am not religious. It is always fresh and magical for me though and a time of magic and excitement. I ignore all the fuss until at least the last week in December, putting up decorations maybe a couple of days before, or even on Christmas Eve along with the tree. My daughter when little liked it that way, as then she knew Christmas was really here - that and the pre Christmas big tidy up!

  7. Tis the season, finally! lol It looks lovely, I love those star lights in the windows. I've been doing the same (even the same music! lol) The tradition here (in our house) is to put up the tree after Thanksgiving dinner. We like to do themes, last year it was retro (which I could do that every year, but get out voted) for this year it's silver and blue on our white faux tree, I still snuck in the retro bubble lights. lol then I slowly over time decorate other areas, like our front porch then a little in the kitchen, plus another tree upstairs. I see your Christmas cactus is already blooming, mine is just starting to bud. Seasons greetings!

  10. since we will be moving house in a few months, I have SERIOUSLY downsized (EVERYTHING), so instead of totes upon totes of Christmas deccies, I only have one! I've hung the stockings and put the remaining room decorations around (the rest will be for the trees) Tomorrow (Sunday) we will put the small artificial tree up. We won't get the live tree until 2 weeks before Christmas. All of my presents have been purchased and wrapped and now I have some Christmas crafts to make. Since it is still November, I'm feeling pretty good right now!
Your livingroom looks so Cozy Annette! I'm smiling just looking at it!
