I have never made a crochet garment but after seeing Fran Morgan's cute Granny Cardigan "A Good Vintage Cardigan" in the latest issue of Simply Crochet #54 I can't resist the temptation. It was actually an Instagram post by Sandra at Cherry Heart that captured my interest at first. She was also tempted to give this pattern a try, but had to many WiPs already on her hook... She reached out to her followers asking what they would do... Of course we all shouted: "DO IT!!!" and within seconds she got persuaded to start on this project from her followers... And with that the Granny Cardigan fever started to spread in our Instagram feeds.
When I came home from vacation I instantly started to dig into my yarn stash to see if I could join in on all the fun. The pattern asks for King Cole Merino Blend 4 ply but I went for my much loved Ideal yarn from Bergere de France. It is a Sport Weight yarn, I would say it is like a very light DK, slightly lighter than the Stylecraft DK. I will be working on a 3,5 mm hook and I think it will be fine.
I am a sucker for blue and grey tones so naturally that is what I am going for. I vision myself wearing this cardigan at the summerhouse with shorts and a T-shirt on early mornings before the sun has warmed up the air or in the evenings when the sun is going down by the bay. I found pretty much what I was looking for in my stash and now the fun will start. I'll keep you posted on my progress. This is a challenge for me. It will be tons of fun though. I'm really excited about this. Are you making this Granny Cardigan too? I would love to know.

It's a lovely cardigan. My favourite crochet cardigans are the ones Sandra at Cherry heart has already made,one of them very cleverly designed by herself. Betsy makes made a beautiful one too. The designer of the Simple Crochet one has made several lovely patterns for cardigans which have been in magazines too and I found them on ravelry. They are really pretty.
ReplyDeleteI have been waiting for people to be interested in making garments. Up until recently there haven't been many patterns available. (People always used to crochet functional and attractive garments - before the in your face 70's versions which put people off I think). Not being up to the job of designing my own, I have had to wait and now finally I think I will get to make something crochet to wear other than hats or scarves.
It will be lovely to see different colour combinations coming through. I think subtle neutrals, pretty pastels or colourful brights will all look good. I'm exited at the prospect of seeing them all!

DeleteI totally agree. Sandra has made some really pretty cardigans lately. And it is much longed for to see cool and cute crochet garment patterns to make. Crochet is quite limited when it comes to garments I find... I'm so pleased some designers has taken on the challenge to change that. Will have to check out Betsy Makes blog to see her cardi makes. Hi Annette, I'd spotted it too on the Cherry Heart Blog and bought the digital version. A while ago I made your Nordic shawl in the original colours. I'll be using the same colours for this! Vannerie will be the base. Keep us updated, I'm sure yours is going to be lovely.

I'm keen to hear how it works out with a slightly heavier wool. here in south australia we spend a lot of time being hot so fingering weight is a perfect jumper weight. i've got to thank you for drawing my attention to this. I am completely in love with it and am so keen to start. We should be having a CAL!

Maybe a nice cotton yarn would work for you? Gives you the colours without the warmth. Have fun! Janina
DeleteYes. A fingering weight cotton would be a great option. Maybe stay away from mercerized though as it tends to be a bit stiff. I'll publish an update blog post soon to share my progress on using a heavier yarn. See you girls around.
